I was approached by Bond with an assignment to photograph the staff of an interior design agency, Workspace. The catch was that the pictures would have to be expressive, simple and give off a vibe of quality. Being mainly a people photographer, I happily took the task. We shot for two days to maximize the time spent with each subject (15 altogether in the first stage + more later on) in order to make sure we got both an energetic pose + a relaxed, more natural portrait out of them all.

The subjects turned out to be wonderfully in tune with the idea and aided by blazing music and an overcaffeinated photographer they got into playing around in front of the camera surprisingly quickly.

After the initial portrait sessions, I was tasked to photograph various spaces the agency had designed. A few pictures of these are mixed in with the portraits.

The work paid off as the project was awarded with a Golden Award at "The best of the year"-awards (Vuoden huiput-gaala) by Grafia in 2012.

  • finavia / bond
Finavia is a state owned entity that manages the finnish airport network. Their clients include both the travel industry and its airlines as well as the passenger using these services.

The goal here was to illustrate Finavia's customer path, designed for passenger usage, which had just had its graphics, including signposts and information boards revamped by Bond design agency (http://bond.fi)

The idea of an anonymous, visually unobtrusive passenger in the form of a pair of boots + luggage came to mind as I was trying to bring a bit of myself into an otherwise run of the mill assignment. The designers already have their finished graphics ready to put on display so why not try something else?

Vacon produces AC drives, solar inverters and wind power converters. Electrical devices which among other things control motor speeds in such appliances as elevators, cranes, pumps and fans. A good one, for instance can reduce the power usage of a modern highrise significantly by optimizing these run speeds.

Vacon feels strongly about its workforce being the heart of the company, so we decided to approach this branding effort by picking out real locations that feature their devices in use and pair these backgrounds with actual Vacon employees and clients.

Location scouting took quite a bit of effort in this case - two of the pictures were taken in Finland while two more were produced in the UK, in London and four were squeezed out in Singapore. Finding good angles towards the end use products (buildings, elevators, cranes etc.) from platforms with relatively quiet passthrough traffic was crucial as we were working with amateurs as talent and were careful not to stress them out more than necessary.

Mirrors captivate our attention with the promise of offering a private glimpse into what others see in us. Why we matter.

At times our reflection serves to celebrate and heighten our sense of self. Other times a mere glance is enough to send us swerving down a highway of despair and self pity. Do we matter?

I smile at a mirror and in turn am rewarded with a smirk. I sulk and face an angry, relentless stare.

How do I feel? Finding out for myself sounds hard and final, even. I think I'll rather go and consult a shiny surface, shiny surface on the wall.

Espoo Blues, a finnish championship leage hockey team needed a total visual makeover for the 12-13 season. Me and two other Duotone photographers were employed to come up with the photography effort while Kokoro & Moi were in charge of the layout & graphics of their site.

The season was about to begin so time was definitely of the essence - spreading the different shoots onto several days simply wasn't an option. Instead, the three of us made it a joint effort, me taking care of around 60 portraits (players, management, maintenance etc.) during the shoot day while Taavetti Alin produced their advertising material on the ice and Juho Huttunen shot illustrational material in and around the arena.

    Long, fun day.

The house looks so different. I barely recognize it anymore. No, when I squint, it’s still familiar. It’s just that everything has been covered in.. Time? It’s as if time stopped blowing through the house at some point and instead just decided to linger around and stack up on top of the surfaces. On top of itself, layer upon layer it lends a roundness to peaks and edges that used to stand out sharp. When I came in, the sun was burning up outside but in here the light is soft.

Who is the man in the window? Does he live here now? Who could tread so carefully so as to avoid disturbing the patina which was never patinized?

  • certain things just go together
Sundays and comfortable couches. Friends and laughs. A quiet room, cool, still air and daydreaming. Throw in a soft blanket and spare time.

Loved ones smiling and the smell of wholesome food.

Coffee and cigarettes. Sauna and a couple of beers. A tall glass of gin & tonic and a night hot enough to have sweat dripping down your nose.

A warm, woolly sweater in the cold of winter. Leather boots and snow. A pair of shorts and the tropics. Sensi and a soft, wide hammock tied up loose.
Dreaming up an original idea moments before letting go of consciousness and willfully forfeiting it to the oblivion of sleep.

We pass by characters every day.

Some of us find them intriguing while others opt to keep their distance. Regardless of our base reaction, most of us usually keep stepping, even in instances where we've already taken the time to wonder what the deal with a particular eccentric-looking gentleman or lady might be.

This particular gent is one of the regulars around my neighborhood. He's lived here for more than Thirty years and gets by with what he gets for selling pamphlets, manifestos of sorts he makes for every holiday and special occasion. When his calendar looks dry as far as noteworthy days go, he writes crime short stories and sells those on the corner.

I used to pass him by every other day, hurrying off wherever I felt I needed to be. Inside I was kicking myself for not stopping since I always figured he'd have a story or two to share, given the chance. While I went my own way, he stayed there on the corner, wearing the same old jacket and hanging onto a plastic bag, full of his pamphlets.

For me, this story is not of him particularly, though - even if at first glance the pictures seem to be.

These wonderful, eccentric personalities, along with our reactions to them go a long way at defining our neighborhoods and lending them soul. In a rapidly moving world, it's hard to grow roots as it is. When you factor in years of prosperity dragging up housing costs and most city blocks being gentrified, the very essence that transforms stone and wood into homes is being diluted.

I just hope to never forget we're all kooks. For whatever reason most of us just don't wear our hearts on our sleeves.

We all have our own twist, our own hustle - our unique Helsinki in our own heads and hearts.

  • sauna, dad
My grandfather built this sauna. It isn't the biggest or the fanciest but it does have a wonderful warmth to it. He has since passed on.

My dad looks more and more like his father by the day.

Maybe at some point I'll get to share a few moments in this very sauna with my own son or daughter and be ripped into for starting to look like grandpa. Who knows? Genes are funny like that.

    Gust to gale to storm.

Nails may be clipped and hands washed to keep the nether world safely tucked away, at a distance. Walls can be built so the inhabitants may harbor a sense of higher sophistication.

Ultimately only gravity can stop (a) growth.

Copycat warning: I've outrageously lifted both the title and the liberal use of the written term beavers from the late great Vonnegut.

He was on a quest for wide-open beavers. Not Vonnegut (As far as I know, which is very little) but the gentleman pictured here. The night before, he'd pulled out all the stops to get one to open up, to no avail. He'd given the beaver-keeper hugs and kisses, even cited poems. Import stuff, mind you. The nice variety. Her legs remained crossed. I didn't really ask why he thought that was, and am beating myself for it in retrospect. Then again, the beaver-keepers' motives are notoriously hard to predict.

The man was simply put, on a mission. As agitated as he understandably was, he was kind enough to exchange a couple of words with me. Most of the words circled around beavers of varying furriness.

As we were talking, I was, like a true narcissist, already a thousand miles away, thinking about writing these very lines you're reading now. To tie the pictures into the conversation I was feverishly looking for a widely used local beaver variety, often found scribbled onto surfaces such as seen here in the background, to include in a frame.

I didn't find one. I felt like a failed photographer.

    Vittu.
